RL 2.4  Describe how words/ phrases supply rhythm and meaning in a story or poem

RL 2.5 Understand the beginning, middle, and end of a story

RL 2.6 Tell points of view of different characters

RL 2.7 Use illustrations/ words to demonstrate understanding of characters, setting, and plot.

RL 2.9  Compare/ Contrast two or more versions of the same story

Reading Informational Text

RI 2.1  Ask and answer who, what, where, when, etc. to show understanding of key details in a text

RI 2.2  Identify main idea/ topic in text

RI 2.3  Describe connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas, or steps in technical procedures in a text

RI 2.4  Determine meaning of words/ phrases using context

RI 2.5  Know and use text features (captions, headings, bold print)

RI 2.6  Identify author's purpose (inform, explain, or describe)

RI 2.7  Explain how images (diagrams) clarify a text

RI 2.8  Describe how reasons support points the author makes

RI 2.9  Compare/ Contrast two texts on the same topic


Foundational Skills 

RF 2.3 Know/apply grade-level phonics/ word analysis skills to decode words 

RF 2.4  Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency 

Language

L 2.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar in writing/ speaking (plural nouns, reflexive pronouns, irregular verbs, adjectives, adverbs, complete sentences, compound sentences)

L 2.2  Use correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling in writing

L 2.4 Use root words, prefixes/ suffixes, and context clues to clarify meaning of unknown words

Writing (Focus will be on 3 types of writing)

W 2.1  Writing to persuade (opinion w/ reasons)

W 2.2  Writing to inform or teach (informatory/ explanatory)

W 2.3  Writing to tell a story (narrative)

In 2nd grade, the focus will be on writing complete paragraphs, with a topic sentence, supporting details, and closing sentence.

Speaking and Listening Standards

SL 2.1  Participate in collaborative conversations with peers following agreed-upon rules for discussions 

SL 2.2  Retell key ideas/ details after listening or reading 

SL 2.3  Ask/ answer questions about what a speaker says

SL 2.4  Tell a story or recount an experience aloud

SL 2.5  Create audio recordings of stories/ poems

SL  2.6  Use complete sentences when speaking
